Padmashree Late Dr. G. G. Jadhav Journalism Chair

 
Padmashree Late Dr. G.G.Jadhav Journalism Chair is established in Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Shivaji University, Kolhapur on January 2017 with the financial support of Government of Maharashtra. This kind of Chair is the first chair in the Department of Journalism in Indian Universities. At Present Dr. Shivaji Jadhav is working as a coordinator of the chair.
The chair is an outcome of the proposal made by Daily Pudhari Group, one of the prominent media house in Maharashtra. Daily Pudhari has celebrated its Golden Jubilee year on 22nd June 1989 in the auspicious presence of then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The then Governor of Maharashtra K Brahmanand Reddy and then Chief Minister Sharad Pawar also attended the function. In the year 2015, daily Pudhari has celebrated its Platinum Jubilee in the auspicious presence of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. During the speech, Prime Minister praised the contribution of Padmashree Late Dr. G. G. Jadhav in nation building as well as in various social movements. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his tribute to the meritorious work done by Dr.G G. Jadhav. The Governor of Maharashtra, Shri Vidyasagar Rao, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadnavis, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari, the Union Railway Minister Shri Suresh Prabhu and Chairman & chief Editor of Pudhari Dr. Pratapsinh Jadhav were present on the occasion.

Padmashree Late Dr. G. G. Jadhav

Dr. G. G. Jadhav started his career as a journalist in Bombay by joining weekly ‘Tej’ and later daily   Kaivari.  In 1933 he returned to Kolhapur and started a weekly ‘Sevak’ and then in May 1937 a weekly ‘Pudhari’. It was converted into a daily in 1939. Dr. G.G.Jadhav became the sole owner of the Pudhari newspaper. He was active participant in the various social movements undertaken by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. He worked and stayed with Dr. Ambedkar during the dalit movement led by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and also participated in the ‘Kalaram Mandir Pravesh’ .

He put in remarkable services to the progress and development of a number of educational institutions which includes the establishment of Shivaji University, Moune Vidhyapeeth and Tararani Vidhyapeet . His contribution in the cooperative movement in South Maharashtra is remarkable. He was the founder Director of Shetakari Sahakari Sangh and many more cooperative sugar factories in the region.  Hundreds of monuments took place because of his editorials of daily Pudhari. He contributed to Satya Shodak and Praja Parishad movements also.
Considering his social and journalistic contribution, people raised funds for celebrating   his 75th birthday and building ‘Patrakar Bhavan’ after his name. He received   Kakasaheb Limaye Paritoshik in 1983 and Acharya Atre Smriti Sanman Puraskar in 1985 awarded by Marathi Patrakar Sangh,Mumbai. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest Indian civilian honour of Padma Shri in 1984 and issued a commemorative postage stamp depicting his image on 12 November 2009.
