 HISTORY:

Shivaji University, Kolhapur was established in the year 1962. The University Library started functioning in June 1964 with a collection of 7000 books. The university library was named as a tribute to the memory of Late Barrister Balasaheb Khardekar as ‘Barr. Balasaheb Khardekar Library’ on 24th October, 1981 and was inaugurated at the auspicious hands of Hon'ble Shri. O.P. Mehra, the then, Chancellor and Governor of Maharashtra. The new library building of Barrister Balasaheb Khardekar library was inaugurated on 24th January, 1996 at the auspicious hands of Hon’ble Dr. P.C. Alexander, the then, Chancellor and Governor of Maharashtra.

the nomenclature of ‘Library’ changed to ‘Knowledge Resource Center’ as per the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016. Accordingly the name of “Barr. Balasaheb Khardekar Library” was changed to “Barr. Balasaheb Khardekar Knowledge Resource Center” as per the approval of Management Council Vide Item No. 7 dated 7th February 2018  and Item No.21 dated 27th April 2018 respectively  for the resolution passed by Barr. Balasaheb Khardekar Knowledge Resource Center Committee meeting vide Item No. 11/1 dated 26th March 2018. Since then, the University Library is known as “Barr. Balasaheb Khardekar Knowledge Resource Center (BBKKRC)”.

BBKKRC aims to be a leading Knowledge Resource Centre with rich collection of information resources, qualitative information services and products suitable for all the academic disciplines.

Apart from the regular users from the university, it is open to other stakeholders like senior citizens and Government servants,persons with disabilities, researchers from other universities and institutes.  For any citizen, a nominal reference charge of Rs. 50/- is charged per day for using the library resources from 10.30 a.m. to 6.00 p.m .

VISION:

 “As a center of intense intellectual inquiry, the Barrister Balasaheb Khardekar Knowledge Resource Center shares with the University the aspiration to be an intelligent hub of learning, research, interaction, and invention among students, faculty, staff, senior citizens and affiliated college teachers.”

MISSION:

“To disseminate scholarly literature to the university community in order to empower them by accessible, innovative, responsive library services that is supported by an excellent range of high-quality resources and committed staff.”

 

INFRASTRUCTURE:

Total area of Barrister Balasaheb Khardekar Knowledge Resource Center is 10,601.45 sqm including new Knowledge Resource Centre building ( Study Room)

1. OLD KNOWLEDGE RESOURCE CENTER BUILDING:

Terrace Reading Hall with a seating capacity of 100 students

 

 2. NEW KNOWLEDGE RESOURCE CENTER BUILDING:

Ground Floor:    

 Reading Hall (Seating Capacity 400), Virtual Classroom (Seating Capacity 150) and Resource Center for Inclusive Education (RCIE).
 First Floor:

 Reading Hall along with a separate hall for female students (Seating Capacity 400).

   (On both the floors, modular design of well-equipped modern furniture, Wi-Fi facility, purified drinking water and sanitary services etc. are provided to readers’ community.
