  Resource Centre for Inclusive Education (RCIE Centre)  


 

                                             

 

  INTRODUCTION:  
RCIE is housed in extended library building of Barr. Balasaheb Khardekar Library, Shivaji University, Kolhapur. The centre has been established for providing library and Educational services to visually impaired, physically disabled students/teachers of P.G. departments of the university, the colleges affiliated to Shivaji University and people with disabilities in general. The aim of the Centre is to help the visually impaired and physically disabled students to gain easy access to e-books, Braille books and internet based information resources, to empower the disabled students of the university/colleges by enabling them to use ICT for education and learning.
RCIE was established in September 2016 with the financial support from Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), Government of Maharashtra. The center works to empower the persons with disabilities through inclusive higher education. The center aims at incorporation of students with significant disabilities into general academic courses in universities and colleges along with non-disabled students. The centre works for the inclusion and development of visually impaired, Hearing disabled, orthopedically impaired and mentally challenged students from affiliated colleges of Shivaji University and its departments, special schools for persons with disabilities.

Digital launch of the RCIE Center, Shivaji University Kolhapur was made by Hon'ble HRD Minister Shri. Prakash Javadekar on 17th April 2017

 

  OBJECTIVES:  

  • To provide Equal educational opportunities for all disabled students.
  • To bring the visually impaired students in the main stream of higher education and build their capabilities for employment
  • To impart training in use of Computer and Assistive Technology.
  • Use of print and e-resources like e-books and audio books for academic and research assignments
  • To create awareness about disabilities in society and change social mindset

  PROGRAMMES ORGANIZED:  


During last five years and this current year center has organized training workshop for students from university departments and affiliated colleges. The details of these workshop are given below:

Year – 2015-16

  • One day workshop on “ICT training for visually impaired students and a faculty” was organized on January 13, 2015 Three Day’s workshop on ICT Training for Visually Impaired Student/Faculty 6th January to 8th January 2016. Resource Persons –Dr. Manohar Vaswani, Shivaji University Kolhapur

Year – 2016-17

  • One Day workshop for persons with disabilities on Inclusion, Education and Accessibility was organized on 6th January’ 2017. Chief Guest - Miss. Sonali Navangul, Famous Marathi Writer. Resource Persons – i) Mr. Dhananjay Bhole, Savitribai Phule Pune University Pune. ii) Mr. Rajesh Asudani RBI Main Office, Nagpur iii) Dr. Manohar Vaswani, Shivaji University Kolhapur iv) Mr. Ramesh Sathe, Unique Educational Equipments, Pune. 
  • On occasion of National science day, an exhibition of low vision kit, JAWS software, Braille books and related equipments was organized for the period from 28th February to 3rd March 2017.
  • Also conducted Braille book reading competition on 3rd March 2017 for all the disabled students form the different blind schools of Kolhapur and Sangali Districts. 
  • Prof. Manohar Vaswani and Sangram Killedar completed seven days’ workshop with Hands-on Training for use of JAWS software other equipment at XRCVC, St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai from the period 6th to 12we March 2017.
  • Digital launch of the RCIE Center, Shivaji University Kolhapur was made by Hon'ble HRD Minister Shri. Prakash Javadekar on 17th April 2017.

Year – 2017-18

  • Five Day’s Workshop on “A Short term Course in Basic Computer and English Communication” 18th Dec to 22nd 2017. Resource Persons – i) Dr. Manohar Vaswani, Shivaji University Kolhapur ii) Mr. Dhananjay Bhole, Savitribai Phule Pune University Pune.
    iii) Miss. Zainab Chinikamwala, Membership Head, Book Share (Asia & Africa)
    iv)Dr. Tripti K. Karekatti, Assistant Professer, Dept. of English, Shivaji University, Kolhapur.
  • Eye Donation Program on the occasion of Louis Braille Birth Anniversary i.e 4th Jan 2018, in the presence of Dr. Atul Raut, Head, Eye Department, Govt. Medical College, Kolhapur.

  
Year – 2018-19

  • Guest lecture on Yoga and Health was conducted under UGC Scheme for PWD’s on 27/09/2018. Lecture delivered by Yoga Trainer Datta Patil. 
  • Celebrated ‘International day of persons with Disabilities and UID Campaign’ on 3rd December 2018 in collaboration with RCIE center of BBKKRC and UGC Scheme for persons with disabilities. On this day Appreciation Certificates were issued to PWD students for their achievements in different fields.
  • Organized ‘State Level Sports Competition for all Deaf and dumb impaired persons’ between 28-30th December 2018 in collaboration with RCIE center of BBKKRC, Sports section and Mook Badhir Association, Kolhapur.
  • On the occasion of World Braille Day arranged one day workshop on “The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016”, on 4th January 2019.

 

Year – 2019-20

  • UGC Scheme for Persons with Disabilities, Central Placement cell, Center for Skills & Entrepreneurship Development and Resource Center for Inclusive Education (BBKKRC) jointly organized “Job & Skill Fair for persons with disabilities” on 28th June 2019.
  • Resource Center for Inclusive Education (BBKKRC), Students Welfare Department, UGC Scheme for Persons with Disabilities and Center for Skills & Entrepreneurship Development jointly organized “Cultural Competition for persons with disabilities” on 26th November 2019.
  • Resource Center for Inclusive Education (BBKKRC), Students Welfare Department, UGC Scheme for Persons with Disabilities and Center for Skills & Entrepreneurship Development jointly organized “World Handicapped Day” for Persons with Disabilities, on 3rd December 2019.
  • On the occasion of World Braille Day arranged one day National Workshop on “Development of Accessible Library for Persons with Disabilities”, on 8th January 2020.
  • Development of university website accessible to all visual impaired students

Year – 2020-21

  • University - Policy for Persons with Disabilities 
  • Celebrated ‘International day of persons with Disabilities’ on 3rd December 2020 in collaboration with RCIE center of BBKKRC, UGC Scheme for persons with disabilities and Center for Study of Exclusion and Inclusive Policies. On this day Delivering lecture by Mr. Yajurvendra Mahajan Founder of Deepstambh foundation Jalgaon.

  AWARDS:  

  • This center has received Indian Association for the Blind (IAB), Madurai ‘Blind Empowerment Champions 2016 Silver Zone Award’ for outstanding excellence and amazing commitment towards voluntary contribution for the empowerment of persons with visual challenges.
  • This center has received Mrs. Helen Azariah Memorial excellence award for peace, prosperity, culture and social service from Association of Third World Studies South Asia Chapter (ATWS, SAC) on 29th November 2016.
  • Again this center has received Indian Association for the Blind (IAB), Madurai ‘Redefining Abilities Rescripting Lives, Certificate of Appreciation 2017.

 

  FUTURE PLANS:  

  • To organize workshops for skill development of persons with disabilities
  • To organize awareness campaigns for all
  • To organize various competition and workshops for personality development of persons with disabilities in various districts
  • To Provide services through Book Share organization regarding transforming Print books in to audio books using Divyanayan & Daisy Softwares
  • To Provide services like transforming Print books in to Braille books
  • To organize skill development workshops like chocolate making for deaf & dump students so that they can earn money.
  • To organize UDID campaign for all PWD’s in university affiliated district
  • To develop e-contents for deaf & dump students as per their curriculum of distance education for graduation degree.
