Visionary Voice-Chancellor of Shivaji University, Kolhapur Prof. Dr. Manikrao Salunkhe established the M.A. Mass Communication course in 2005. Bhalba Vibhute was entrusted with the post of course coordinator. The course was designed in accordance with the new norm established by UGC. This course typically focuses on new trends and practices in the journalism and mass communication fields. Dr. Vibhute served as the coordinator from 2005 to 2009. Dr. Omprakash Kalme served as course coordinator for a few months in 2009. Prof. Dr. Nisha Pawar was the course coordinator from 2009 to 2023. Dr. Shivaji Jadhav is currently the course coordinator.
M. A. Mass Communication course typically focuses on how information is conveyed through various media channels, such as television, radio, newspapers, magazines, and digital platforms. This field of study encompasses several key areas like journalism, public relations, advertising, broadcasting, digital media, media theory and research, film and media production, communication studies, and others. The department is one of the most popular mass communication education institutes in the country. Mass communication students are taught by important journalists working in the actual field. So students get real field experience. The department has social connections through various workshops for enthusiasts who are trying to gain knowledge in the field of media. The department also provides training programs for journalists working in rural and digital media.
Kolhapur has a glorious tradition of the film industry. To carry forward this tradition, Shivaji University started the BA Film Making course in the academic year 2024. The course was started with the inspiration of the Vice-Chancellor Shivaji University, Kolhapur Prof. Dr. Digambar Shirke. It is a three-year full-time course after 12th. Kolhapur is the home of art, and many technicians, artists, writers, and directors from here have shone at the national as well as international level. The filmmaking course has opened another gallery of art to the students. In 2024, the department organizes an audition for a film that provides a practical experience for students.
The department has very good placement in various sectors like print media, electronic media, education, public relations, advertising, radio, television, digital media, and film, as well as the government sector. The alumni of a mass communication department played a crucial role in the development and success of the department. They have provided valuable networking opportunities for current students, helping them secure internships, job placements, and collaborations
The department organizes various seminars, workshops, and guest lectures to give students current and authentic knowledge in the field of media. Workshops often involve practical exercises and activities, allowing participants to apply concepts in real-time and acquire new skills or enhance existing ones through structured, interactive sessions. Guest lectures are often experts or leaders in their field, providing insights and knowledge that may not be available in textbooks or regular coursework. Hearing from an external expert can offer new viewpoints and approaches to topics, enriching the learning experience. Guest speakers often bring the latest industry trends, research findings, and innovations to their presentations.
The department has also provided a platform for award-winning documentary and short film producers and directors to showcase their work. The YouTube channel is run by the students and features the talk show ‘Student Kata', (स्टुडन्ट कट्टा) which is a unique feature of the mass communication course. Students post news from the university. Recently, students produced a documentary on ‘Krantivan’ (क्रांती वन). The documentary was researched, scripted, and edited by mass communication students.
