Best Practices
1. Strengthening the linkage between UG and PG statistics program:
Introduction:
Affiliated colleges running UG program in a particular subject are expected to provide a good input through well trained students for a fruitful and successful PG Program. A good academic linkage between the concerned UG and PG departments is likely to favorably support this objective, while in reality university PG departments are found to act in isolation with UG departments.
In order to enhance the linkage between UG and PG stakeholders, our department is organizing following events in collaboration with a registered organization of statistics teachers named SUSTA every year:
• Written quiz test for B. Sc. - I/II/III (Statistics), B.Sc. Computer Science Part I and B.Com Part II students, with more than 4000 participants every year.
• Personality development program for B.Sc. II/III (Statistics) students, with more than 100 participants every year.
• Oral quiz for B. Sc. -II (Statistics) students, with more than 200 participants every year.
Additionally B.Sc. II students of many colleges visit this department under study tour every year and are guided for careers in statistics by the expert faculty of this department.
Procedure:
In the recent years, through a registered organization ‘SUSTA’, whose President and Vice-President are respectively HOD and a senior teacher working in PG Department, above mentioned activities were organized.
Evidence of Success:
It is worth to note the following tangible/intangible benefits of the activities.
• UG statistics students visit the university campus and interact with PG faculty and get to know about job opportunities in statistics.
• The increasing trend in the number of M. Sc. - statistics and ASI entrance applications is indicative of the fact that many UG students are attracted to the statistics subject and plan for pursing Masters program in an early stage of their UG program.
• This has also reflected in enhanced placement activity of the department in last few years.
• College teachers’ interaction with PG teachers has been increased and teachers are attracted to pursue research programs of the department.
Problems:
Since the activities are organized in collaboration with college teachers, we have not encountered any serious problems/issues.
Resources:
A token fee of Rs. 25/- is being charged from students appearing for written test. For no other activity, fees are charged. All expenses are being met from the fees collected.
2. Seminar: An activity to enhance personality of students
Introduction:
Now-a-days, cracking selection process for job in any organization involves good performance in personal interview. Many aspects of the candidate are tested in this round. Some of which are confidence and self presentation. Also, articulation of perceived ideas by the candidate is under observation. The students admitted to the department are from the rural background and face difficulties in these aspects. To overcome this issue, we organize seminars for students in every semester.
Procedure:
A schedule is displayed well in advance so that students can prepare for seminars. Every student is assigned to one faculty member for guidance. Usually, students are asked to choose topics pertaining to a single theme. This facilitates understanding of a new concept in whole. PowerPoint slides are compulsory for presentation. Seminars of all students studying in the same semester are conducted on a single day in parallel sessions.
Evidence of Success:
It is worth to note the following tangible/intangible benefits of the activities.
• Boost in confidence and better articulation of ideas by students in front of learned crowd.
• Enhanced placement activity of the department in last few years.
Problems:
We have not encountered any serious problems/issues.
Resources:
This activity requires a computer, LCD/LED projector and a hall, which are available with the Department.
3. OAOB: One Alumnus one Book Scheme
Introduction:
Education is a continuous learning process. Students in the department require books for learning purpose. University library has all the books necessary for learning the course prescribed in the syllabus. However, multiple copies of reference books are not available. To resolve this issue, Department library is established. However, funds for procuring books for the departmental library are not available. The current students of the department donate books to the department library but these are not enough. To overcome this financial problem, we appealed to our alumni to donate one book of their choice to enrich the departmental library.
Procedure:
An appeal to alumni is made by the head of the department for donating books by email. Alumni purchase books online and put shipping address of the Department. This is a continuous process and every year we receive a substantial number of books. On the received book, the name of the donor is mentioned. Books are made available to the current students through Department Library.
Evidence of Success:
It is worth to note the following tangible/intangible benefits of the activities.
• Till date 286 titles have been donated by our alumni to the departmental library.
• This has facilitated the current students in their day today learning.
Problems:
Reaching out to the alumni whose contact details are not available in the department has been a problem encountered.
Resources:
This activity requires bookshelves for holding the books, which are available with the Department library.
