Department of Library and Information Science
The Department of library and Information Science is one of the renowned Department of Library and Information Science in the Maharashtra state which was established on 22nd July, 1964. This Department was formally inaugurated by Former Hon. Vice-Chancellor Dr. Appasaheb Pawar in April, 1965. After the establishment of the department, initially, the diploma course in Library & Information Science was started from the academic year 1964-65. Further, in the academic year 1972-73, this course was upgraded to Bachelor of Library & Information Science. The Master of Library & Information Science programme was started from the academic year 1985-86. The department also has to its credit M.Phil. and Ph.D.programmes from the academic year 2006-07 and 1990-91 respectively.
At present the department has Seven faculty members including two Assistant Professors, one Temporary Assistant Professor and four contributory teachers. They are specialized in different areas like Management, Knowledge Organization, Information & Communication Technology, Research and Statistical Techniques, Bibliometrics, Scientometrics, Altmetrics, Social Media Analytics, Digital Library, and Information Literacy etc.
The Department offers three programmes i.e. B. Lib. & I. Sc., M. Lib. & I. Sc. and Ph. D. The intake capacity of B. Lib. & I. Sc. and M. Lib. & I. Sc. is 40 and 20 respectively. The curriculums of B. Lib. & I. Sc. and M. Lib. & I. Sc. programmes are revised as per as per the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 from academic year 2022-23 onwards. The department was honoured by the University as the ‘Best Department’ in the campus during the foundation day of the University on 18 th November 2022. Recently, the department has received second rank among all the academic departments in ‘Administrative Excellence Campaign-2023’ of Shivaji University, Kolhapur. The department is well furnished with physical facilities and ICT infrastructure.
