Department of Biotechnology, Shivaji University, Kolhapur

The Department of Biotechnology since its inception in 2003 has made a visible and remarkable achievements although the Department was started by the University on a self supporting basis. Foundations and innovations accomplishments by this Department have encouraged planning meticulously the road map of progress for this Department for the next 25 years. Certain targets such as quality education, synergy between research and its practical application, participation by farmers and entrepreneurs have been pursued vigorously. The staff members have impressive track record in academic and research contributions which have been highly appreciated and recognized. The department has spacious space for M.Sc. class rooms and practical laboratories. Research laboratories for Ph. D. students are well equipped with all modern tools and machines. A separate room for internet access is open for students. All high tech instruments have been installed in a planned design lay out.

Mandate

• A world class acceptable research and education encompassing the emerging areas of Biotechnology
• A well formulated syllabus for post graduate and diploma courses in conjunction with other research and academic activities on the campus
• Latest thrust frontiers of Biotechnology have been focused on plant biotechnology, molecular markers, DNA bar coding, bio prospecting of medicinal plants, drug development, bioremediation of toxic chemicals, bioreactor design and development and transgenic plants .
• Special stress on intellectual property and patent submissions,
• Collaborative research with University departments, various national research institutions and industries.

• Development of a vibrant centre of biotechnology

The priority of the research is related to micropropagation of elite germplam, rescue of rare plants from Western Ghats, secondary plant metabolism, precise analysis of natural drugs and their further development, identification of plants based on molecular techniques, development of plants and microbes for degradation of industrial hazardous chemicals. Assistant from other University departments and reputed laboratories in selected work is a continuous activity.

The department is conducting degree courses since last 10 years as follows;  

• Two year M.Sc. degree course (Biotechnology)
• Ph.D.
• Post-doctoral Research

All the academic activity listed above are distinctive and having intense course and its further follow up. The students have been immensely benefited as reflected in the students passing various competitive examinations and placement of past students.

We have been consistently ranked in the top twenty Biotechnology Schools in country since 2008 and secured eight positions in the year 2012-2013.
