The Department of Sociology was established in the Shivaji University, Kolhapur during the academic year 1970-71. It offers M.A., M. Phil. and Ph. D. courses to the students. Right from the establishment of the department, it is actively engaged in organizing state, national and International level seminars and conferences on various themes. With due recognition of the earlier achievements, UGC, in 1994, had recognized this Department as a resource centre for Sociology of Environment subject. Department has been identified by the UGC Under UGC-SAP-DRS-Phase-I with the thrust area of Sociology of Development and Environment in the academic Year 2004-05 and it has successfully completed  UGC-SAP-DRS- Phase-III in the academic year 2019-20.

Goals 

• To equip the students with the latest sociological knowledge, research aptitude and skills
• To enrich students’ understanding of the dynamics of Indian Society and the global social order
• To strengthen sociological research pertaining to the issues in the region in particular and nation in general and
• To strengthen research in the thrust area of the Department, namely Sociology of Development & Environment. and Sociology of Weaker Sections.
