The Department of Sociology was established in the Shivaji University during the academic year 1970-71 with Dr. M. M. Awate as the In-Charge Head of Department. Subsequently, Mr. B. B. Deshmukh and Dr.S.N.Pawar joined the Department in the year1971.Mr.B.B.Deshmukh left the Department in the year 1972. Miss. Usha Tribhuvan was with the department for a period of five years from 1972 to 1977. Dr. Vilas A. Sangave joined the Department as a Reader and Head in the year1975.He became Professor and Head in the year1979.Dr.R.B.Patil, Dr.S.M. Dahiwale and Dr.J.B.Ambekar (Yadav) joined the Department in the years 1979 and1983 respectively. Dr.S.N. Pawar took charge of the Department initially as Reader and Head (1980) and later on as a Professor and Head (1983). Mr.D.Shrikant joined the Department as a lecturer in the year1987. Dr.S. A. Salunkhe joined the Department in the year 1991. Prof. R. N. Salve and Dr. B. N. Kendre joined the department in the year 2003. Dr. Pratibha Desai has joined the Department in 2008 and Dr. Pralhad Mane in 2011 as a Assistant Professor. Dr. Jagan Karade joined the Department in 2013 and Dr. Pratima Pawar in 2014 as an Associate Professor. Prof. R. B. Patil and Prof. R. N. Salve retired in 2016 and Prof. Jagan Karade has taken change as a Head of the Department.
