Department of Physics

Extention and services

The Department organizes the National Science Day Celebrations. On many occasions department invites the public and students to observe the planets Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, and to observe the Lunar and Solar eclipses. The department has a Seismological Laboratory where the study of seismic waves (Earth Quake) is being carried out.

Consultancy Services

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and FT-Raman facility is being availed by the researchers working in other colleges and Institutes in the University and off the University. The department receives the reasonable funds out of it. Recently one project on Energy Audit has been sanctioned to the faculty members of the department funded by DAE.

Space research center Panhala

Panhala is located at 16.82° N, 74.12° E and at 3177 ft. (968 meter) height from sea level. The sky conditions for astronomical observation are most suitable (6 times better) as compared to Shivaji University campus. So, SUK set up Space Research Center, (SRC) at Panhala. Dr.R. S.Vhatkar is the coordinator of SRC. The vision of this laboratory is to establish international level space research centre by installing state of the art related facilities and also to popularize space science, using optical telescopes for astronomical observations of celestial objects and events amongst school and college students and in general public, including tourists. These optical telescopes shall also be used for scientific studies of celestial studies. Currently, three instruments are working in the laboratory which are IRNSS Receiver (installed by ISRO on 4th March 2016), RIOMETER (Relative Ionospheric Opacity Meter) and Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance (SID) unit (in cooperation with Stanford solar center, California). The data from all these instruments have been recorded on regularly basis.
