Workshop Report: Making of Household Chemicals

Title: Workshop on Preparation of Household Chemicals

Venue: Industrial chemistry Practical Lab, Department of Chemistry, Shivaji University, Kolhapur]

Objective of the Workshop
     The workshop aimed to provide students with hands-on experience in the preparation of various household chemicals, such as phenyl, fabric whitener, and liquid soap. The workshop 
also provided valuable insights into the potential for entrepreneurship and starting small-scale businesses with the knowledge gained.

 

Inaugural Function
The workshop was inaugurated at 11:30 a.m. with a formal ceremony. The event was graced by esteemed guests and dignitaries:

Workshop Activities
At 12:30 p.m., the practical session of the workshop commenced. Around **50 students** participated in the hands-on session. Dr. K.V. Gaikwad led the session, demonstrating the preparation 
of various household chemicals, including:
- Phenyl (Floor cleaner)
- Fabric Whitener (Neel)
- Liquid Soap
- Detergent Powder
Participants were guided step-by-step on the methods, techniques, and safety precautions necessary for the preparation of these chemicals.

Key Learnings
The workshop provided valuable insights into the chemical processes involved in creating household cleaning products. Students learned:
- The formulation and preparation processes for various chemicals
- Practical knowledge of household chemical production
- How these products can be marketed and sold in consumer stores
The products created during the workshop will be made available for sale at the **consumer stores of Shivaji University, Kolhapur**, which offers great potential for students looking to 
start their own business ventures.

 

Feedback and Appreciation
The workshop was met with positive feedback from the attendees. Several personalities from various departments visited the session and appreciated the efforts of the students and the 
workshop coordinators:

- Dr. Jyoti Jadhav, Head Deparment of Biotechnology, Shivaji University
-Dr. S. D. Delekar, Director, Innovation, Incubation, and Linkages, Shivaji University
Their presence highlighted the collaborative spirit and support from various faculty members, further enriching the workshop experience for the students.

 

Conclusion and Future Recommendations
The workshop successfully provided students with a valuable skill set in preparing household chemicals. It also sparked interest in entrepreneurship and product marketing, particularly for 
M. Sc.  Industrial Chemistry Post graduates. Based on the success of this workshop, it is recommended to organize similar events in the future to further enhance students' practical 
knowledge and business acumen.

Report of Invited Talk on “Resume Writing” by Dr. V. S. Khandagale

     A workshop on Resume Writing was conducted on 22nd February 2025 at 12:30 PM for M.Sc. Chemistry students. The session was led by Dr. V. S. Khandagale, an esteemed faculty member from the Department of Education, Shivaji University, Kolhapur. The objective of the workshop was to equip students with the essential skills required to craft an effective and professional resume to enhance their career prospects.

     Dr. Khandagale began the session by emphasizing the importance of a well-structured resume in the competitive job market. He highlighted key elements of an impactful resume, including:

•    Proper formatting and structure to ensure clarity and readability.
•    Effective use of keywords to align with job descriptions and industry expectations.
•    Highlighting academic qualifications, research experience, and technical skills relevant to chemistry and allied industries.
•    The role of internships, projects, and extracurricular activities in demonstrating practical knowledge and leadership qualities.
•    Common mistakes to avoid, such as grammatical errors, excessive length, and lack of specificity.

     The session was interactive, with students engaging in discussions and seeking clarifications on various aspects of resume writing. Dr. Khandagale provided practical tips and real-life examples to help students understand the nuances of drafting an impressive resume. He also conducted a hands-on activity where students reviewed sample resumes and identified areas of improvement.

     The event was successfully organized and received positive feedback from participants. It provided M.Sc. Chemistry students with a clear understanding of resume-building strategies, thereby preparing them for future job applications and career advancements.

 
Report of Invited Talk on “Research opportunities in South Korea” by Dr. Supriya Patil

     On 14th January, 2025, Dr. Supriya Patil, a distinguished alumnus of Department of Chemistry who is  Assistant Professor from Sejong University, Seoul, South Korea, delivered an engaging and informative lecture for the M.Sc. II Chemistry students of Shivaji University, Kolhapur. The session was designed to provide insights into academic and research opportunities available in South Korea, particularly for aspiring chemists and researchers.

Key Highlights of the Lecture

1.    Introduction to South Korean Academic Environment: Dr. Patil began by introducing the students to the advanced educational framework and research infrastructure of South Korea. She emphasized the 
       country’s commitment to fostering innovation and scientific exploration.

2.    Overview of Sejong University: A detailed overview of Sejong University’s chemistry department was provided, showcasing its state-of-the-art laboratories, funding opportunities, and globally recognized faculty.

3.    Opportunities for International Students: Dr. Patil elaborated on various academic programs and scholarships available for international students, including:

  •     The Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP).
  •     Research funding options for postgraduate and doctoral studies.
  •     Internship programs that combine industry exposure with academic learning
  •  

4.    Research Collaboration and Innovation: The lecture highlighted cutting-edge research areas in chemistry being explored in South Korea.

5.    Application Process and Requirements: Dr. Patil outlined the step-by-step process for applying to South Korean universities, emphasizing the importance of a strong research proposal and a proactive approach

       to networking with faculty.    

 
Report on Gandhi Jayanti Celebration 02 Oct 2024

     On 2nd October 2025, the M.Sc. I and M.Sc. II students of Industrial Chemistry enthusiastically participated in Swachhata Hi Seva - 2024 Campaign in honor of Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary. The event focused on cleanliness and environmental awareness. 

     The students initiated a cleanliness drive around the Chemistry Department. Armed with gloves, brooms, and garbage bags, they systematically cleaned the surrounding area, picking up litter and organizing waste disposal. The students also spread awareness about proper waste management and recycling practices. 

     Faculty members Dr R M Mane, Dr S B Teli, Dr Aviraj Kuldeep supervised the activity and appreciated the students for their dedication. The initiative not only improved the physical environment but also highlighted the importance of maintaining a clean and green campus. The event ended with a brief talk by Dr G S Rashinkar on sustainability and how small efforts
contribute to a larger cause.
     Overall, the Swachhata Din celebration fostered a sense of responsibility and civic duty among the students, aligning with the national movement for a cleaner India.

Report of Invited Talk on - Teachers Day
Swami Budhyanada Maharaj delivered lecture on Human values on the occasion of teachers day.
Dr. G.S.Rashinkar, Dr.D.M. Pore and Dr.R.M.Mane, delivered speech on this occasion. Dr. Aviraj Kuldeep coordinated all the things according to this program. On this particular day all the students of industrial chemistry they made arrangement of all the program related to Teachers day. We invited Swami Budhya Nanda Maharaj, Ramkrishna math rajarampuri Kolhapur. He delivered lecture on the human values. In his speech he told us about the human values and about the famous speech of Vivekananda in New York. How Swami Vivekananda struggle one month before his famous speech in New York. All the students were stunned by his speech. Abou 36 students were present for the function.

“Report of Two Days Training Session under Capacity Building of PM-USHA"

25th and 26th September, 2024

The Industrial Chemistry Course, Department of Chemistry, in collaboration with the Central Placement Cell, successfully concluded a two-day capacity-building program under the PM-USHA (Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan) initiative. Held on the 25th and 26th of September, 2024, the program aimed at enhancing the professional and employability of M.Sc. Chemistry students through a series of expert lectures and interactive sessions.

The program featured the following insightful sessions:

1. Mr. Dipak Dalavi opened the program with a compelling lecture on Corporate Culture. He introduced students to the fundamental principles of workplace dynamics, the importance of adaptability, and the need for fostering a professional attitude in corporate settings. His talk provided valuable insights into aligning personal values with corporate ethics and thriving in the modern workforce.

2. Mr. Ganesh Kulkarni followed with a practical and hands-on session on Resume Writing and Interview Techniques. His lecture guided the students through the process of building an effective resume and offered valuable tips for acing job interviews. By focusing on structure, presentation, and key communication skills, Mr. Kulkarni equipped students with the tools to present themselves confidently to prospective employers.

3. Dr. U. V. Arvindekar conducted an enlightening session on Expectation Management. His talk focused on setting realistic career goals, managing workplace expectations, and developing the resilience needed for long-term success in the professional world. He also emphasized the importance of self-awareness and effective communication in managing personal and professional relationships. 

In addition to the expert lectures, a key highlight of the program was the Mock Interviews conducted by a panel comprising Dr. Rajan Padval, Coordinator of the Central Placement Cell, and Dr. U. V. Arvindekar. These interviews provided students with a simulated interview experience, allowing them to receive personalized feedback on their performance. The mock interviews were instrumental in boosting the students' confidence and preparing them for real-world interview scenarios.

The program was highly interactive, with students actively engaging in Q&A sessions, discussions, and mock interview exercises. The participation and enthusiasm shown by the students were commendable, reflecting their commitment to learning and selfimprovement.

     We extend our deepest gratitude to Mr. Dipak Dalavi, Mr. Ganesh Kulkarni, Dr. Arvindekar, and Dr. Rajan Padval for their invaluable contributions to the success of this event. A special thanks to Prof. .K. D. Sonawane, Head of Chemistry Department, Prof. K. M. Gardakar, Dr. G. S. Rashinkar, Dr. R. M. Mane, Dr. A. R. Kuldeep, Dr. S. B. Teli, Dr. N. J. Valekar, Dr. P. B. Patil, Ms. Vaibhavi Mendhe, Ms Dhanaya Patankar and all the organizing teams from the M. Sc. Report of Invited Talk on “Goal Setting” by Prof, A. M. Gurav
Prof. A. M. Gurav  delivered invited talk on the topic “ Goal Setting” on 17 August, 2024 for students of Chemistry. 
In his talk, Prof. Gurav emphasized that Goal setting is a fundamental aspect of personal growth and development. As students, it is essential to have a clear sense of direction and purpose in order to achieve academic success and prepare for the future. This is where the concept of goal setting comes into play. In simple terms, goal setting is the process of defining specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound objectives that a student aims to achieve. The benefits of setting goals for students are numerous and far-reaching. By setting goals, students can gain a sense of direction and purpose, which is essential for academic success and personal growth. Setting goals helps students focus on their priorities, motivates them to work harder, and provides a roadmap for their success. Prof. Gurav emphasized that by setting specific, realistic goals and creating a plan of action, students can stay focused and motivated towards their objectives. It's essential to remember that setting goals is a process that requires perseverance, dedication, and flexibility. Goals may need to be adjusted along the way as circumstances change, but the key is to keep moving forward and remain committed to the end result.
 In the epilogue, Prof. Gurav encouraged all students to take the time to set goals for themselves and use the strategies discussed in his lecture to achieve them. All the students were provided with Goal Setting Worksheets where students were directed to use SWOT analysis to fill up the Goal Setting worksheets and submit them to the department. All teachers were requested to mentor the students to achieve their goals by proper evaluation of worksheets.

A large number of students and staff members were present for the program. The program concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Pradip Patil.

 
Invited Talk on "Communication Skills" by Prof. G. S. Rashinkar
Prof. G. S. Rashinkar delivered invited talk on the topic “ Communication Skills” on 24 August, 2024 for students of Chemistry. 
In his talk, Prof. Rashinkar explained the importance of communication skills for achieving success in both personal as well as professional life. Prof. Rashinkar explained that Communication is a word derived from the Latin word communis or commūnicāre, which means ‘to make common’ or ‘to share’. Communication is the act of conveying intended meaning to another person through the use of mutually understood signs and language. Communication is the art of transmitting information, ideas and attitudes from one person to another. Prof. Rashinkar explained the three major forms of communication viz. verbal, non-verbal and written communication. Prof. Rashinkar explained importance of grammar and proper vocabulary during verbal communication. He explained that nonverbal communication is the transmission of information without using words, and can include body language, facial expressions, and physical appearance. It can be used to repeat, compliment, substitute, regulate, or contradict verbal communication. He explained the importance of pitch, voice modulation and effective pauses can enhance the quality of communication. During the talk, Prof. Rashinkar stressed on the fact that communication is both an art and a science. He emphasized on self-communication and thinking within and for oneself, referring to it as an essential skill. 
Prof. Rashinkar at the end of the workshop appreciated the enthusiasm of the students to learn and understand the topic of the lecture. A large number of students and staff members were present for the program. The program concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Aviraj Kuldeep.
 
 
Invited Talk on "Key insights of alkynes for Sustainable Development" by Prof. Dr. Venkata Ramana Doddi
Prof. Dr. Venkata Ramana Doddi  delivered invited talk on the topic “ Key insights of alkynes for Sustainable Development” on 8 August, 2024 for students of Chemistry. 
In his talk, Dr. Venkata Ramana Doddi  gave the insights of his research on the synthesis of alkynes. He explained on the role of DBU role in the sustainable synthesis of terminal alkynes and urea promoted synthesis of 1,3-diynes from 1,1-dibromoalknes. Additionally, he emphasized on the DBU mediated synthesis of ponatinib. Students were fascinated to see the high quality resreach of Dr Doddi. Senior Scientist Prof. P. P. Waadgaonkar, research students and M. Sc. chemistry students were present for the program.
