The Department of Biochemistry is established in 1995 in the University, which was earlier as one of the course paper (1984) and complete course (1989) in the Department of Chemistry with the vision to shape the students to understand molecular mechanism and to find out cause of happenings in the living organism.

Mission of the Department is to produce good Biochemists who can help society to improve the status with respect to health and wealth. Department intends to establish a research laboratory of National repute in the area of Environmental Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and Ayurvedic drug research at molecular levels.

Two years M. Sc. program is formulated for developing competent biochemists/biotechnologist/microbiologist for which significant job opportunities exist in this country. The course is based on interdisciplinary nature of Biochemistry, Chemistry, Quantitative Biology, Genetics, Microbiology and Biophysics.  The program obliges students to read original publications and envisages significant inputs in laboratory work, communication skill, creativity, planning, execution and critical evaluation of the studies undertaken. This program gives common basic knowledge (Biochemistry, Enzymology, Molecular Biology, Research Methodology, Biostatistics, Computer science and Bioinformatics) at first year level to become good biochemists/ biotechnologist/ microbiologist

Laboratories are well equipped with high tech instruments to carryout biochemical and molecular biology work with internet facility.

The faculty members of the Department have significant academic and research contributions which is highly appreciated in scientific community. Two staff members have postdoctoral experience in National Institute of Health, Bethseda, USA; Tuskeegee Institute, Alabama, USA; University of South Florida, USA and National Taiwan University, Taipai, Taiwan.
