The Department of Statistics was established in the year 1982. Shivaji University, Kolhapur launched the M.Sc. Statistics program in the year 1982-83. Dr. R. K. Saxena was the founder head of the Department of Statistics. Initially there were no permanent faculty members in the Department. However, the Department was fortunate enough to have visiting teachers of the caliber of Prof. S. M. Patil, Prof. D. K. Rajhans, Prof. S. R. Badi, Prof. B. K. Kale and others. In 1984, Prof. M. S. Prasad, Prof. R. N. Rattihalli, Prof. B. V. Dhandra and Prof. S. R. Kulkarni joined the Department. Later, it has been supported by Department of Science and Technology through its DST-FIST, DST-PURSE programs and UGC through SAP-DRS-I program.
The Department offers M.Sc., M.Phill. and Ph.D. courses. M.Sc. (Applied Statistics and Informatics) program funded by UGC under Innovative Program Scheme of UGC has been started from the academic year 2013-14. Many outstanding alumni of the Department are presently working in all over India and abroad. The departmental and the central library have a fairly rich collection of books and journals in various diversified areas. The Department has a well-equipped computer laboratory with 140+ PCs, and SYSTAT, SAS, MATLAB, MINITAB, STATISTICA and SPSS Software. |
