VARIOUS ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT
 
  • In the view of Ideal Significance of the Sawai Gandhav Mahotsav held every year at Pune, the Rajarshi Shahu Sangeet Rajani Mahotsav organized at Kolhapur since 1991 by Music and Dramatics Department. During the last eleven years festival’s prominent personalities like Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Smt. Kishori Amonkar, Pt. Hariprasad Chourasia, Smt. Malini Rajurkar and Ustad Rashid Khan have presented their artistic excellence. Shahu Sangeet Rajani is also social projection of Shivaji University which earns additional reputations.
  • On the occasion of 51st Death Anniversary of Late Khan Saheb Bhurji Khan, the Department of Music and Dramatics organised ‘Gharana Sammelana’ during the period 30th September to 4th October, 2001. Round about 80 well known Artists were participated and performed in this sammelana. Some of the well known Artists are : Padmabhushan Dr. Gangubai Hangal, Late Pt. C. R. Vyas, Pt. Yashwantbua Joshi, Pt. Sangameshwarbua Gurav, Pt. Rajan-Sajan Mishra, Smt. Malini Rajurkar, Pandita Dhondutai Kulkarni, Pt. Babanrao Haladankar etc. This Sammelana was a rare opportunity for music lovers. They enjoyed Sammelana for five days. Lalitkala Vibhag achieved the honour to arrange this Sammelana for the first time in India on University level. This event is greatest achievement of this department.
  • Different Workshops : Ideal illustration of Gurukul Paddhati as well as University department academical guidance and blessings of bujurg vocalists and instrumentalists like Pt. Babanrao Haldankar, Pt. Yashwantbua Joshi, Pt. Bhai Gaytonde, Pt. Arvind Mulgaonkar, Pt. Suresh Talwalkar, Shri. Yashwant Deo etc.
  • During the year 1999-2000, Tabla Workshop was organized by the department in the memory of late Ustad Amir Hussain Khan Saheb. 25 students from various places of Maharashtra and Goa were participated and Pt. Arvind Mulgaonkar, Pt. Sudhir Sansare and Pt. Sudhir Mainkar gave their valiable guidance.
  • Harmonium and Organ Workshop was arranged during 3rd to 5th March 2000. Many renowned artists were participated in this workshop. Students of the department were highly enlightened by them. Pt. Rambhau Vijapure, Pt. Manohar Chimote, Pt. Arvind Thatte were some of the artists worked as key resource persons.
  • Efforts to maintain the tradition of Lok Kala Parampara : Along with classical music with a view to maintain the tradition of lok kala music, the department opened a same section Shahiri Course in 1998. In the rural musical arts, folk songs such as Powada, Gan-gavlan, Shetakari geet etc. are presented which are vary simple to understand for common man. These geet prakars are incorporated with subject of importance of education, literacy, and aids awareness etc. so the ultimate aim of these geet prakars is to develop the society through above various subjects. Shahir Shri. Bapurao Vibhute, Shri. Madhukar Nerale, Shri. Vijay Jagtap, Shri. Rajaram Jagtap gave their valuable guidance for the development of this section and it hoped that this section will also achieve highest targets.
  • Music Appreciation is the special activity of Music and Dramatics Department for music lovers and for students. The matter of satisfaction is that today lot of students are studying Indian Classical Music in various institutes and vidyalayas. For these students this activity will be arranged on every 3rd Saturday of every month. The various subjects like Classical Music, Semi-classical Music, Natya Sangeet, Sugam Sangeet, Film Sangeet and Lok Sangeet etc. are included in this activity. The well known artists as well as the department staff will participate in this activity from Kolhapur and around Kolhapur. In a view to develop the depth of study of music, one of the part of this activity is listening of recordings of vocal performances of various artists.
  • To maintain Sangeet Natak Tradition and as well as to give exposure to the students of the department, every year one sangeet natak was arranged by the department like Sangeet Sharada, Sangeet Swayamwar, Sangeet Soubhadra etc. In the year 2001-2002, the students of the department presented five Sangeet Natya Praveshas in Sangeet Natak Competition held by Natesh Rangabhumi, Marshel, Goa and Mhardol, Goa and won various prizes.
