About The Department

 

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication offered one-year full time certificate course [CJ] for 19 years from 1969 to 1988, BJC (1988), MJC, (1995) and UGC model course, M.A. Mass Communication,  (2005).  In 2021 department has started ‘P. G. Diploma in Cyber Journalism, ‘Short Term Course in Writing for Media’ and ‘Short Term Course in CSR and Media’. In 1997, Ph. D.  and M.Phil.  programme has started in 2008. At present, Dr. Nisha Pawar and Dr. Pratap Patil are the Recognized Guides in the department. 11 students have been awarded Ph. D. degree and 7 students obtained M.Phil. At present 08 students are pursuing Ph.D. degree.

Besides, University has started Padmashree Late Dr. G.G. Jadhav Journalism Chair in 2017 with the initiative of Pudhari Media Group with financial support of Government of Maharashtra.  This Chair is probably the first chair in department of Journalism in any Indian Universities.

The Department has organized altogether 45 workshops, state level and national level conferences so far. Department has entered partnership with UNICEF, Maharashtra during 2016-2018. Under this partnership department has organized 7 programmes for journalists and students. Besides, State Level Constituency-wise Situational Analysis of Sustainable Development Goals has been published under this partnership.

The department also conducts workshops on various themes such as UGC SET-NET workshop (2015), Animation and Career Opportunities , Challenges of the New Media , Legislative Reporting (2015), Career Opportunities in films, New trends in Radio Broadcasting (2014), , Social Media and Cyber Laws (2014), Personality Development(2014) to acquaint the students with the new opportunities and trend in the media industry.

Department has also organized various students activities including ‘Spark Film Festival (2015 onwards)’, ‘Marathi Patrakar Din’, ‘Educational Tours’, ‘Field Visits’ to various media houses, ‘Traditional Day’ and other cultural activities. In 2007, department had organized Sri Lanka study tour of 40 students. Every year, department organizes Candle March, a unique programme to offer tribute to the martyrs of 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai.

Department has celebrated Golden Jubilee in 2018-19. On this occasion department has organized Students Alumni Meet [23 October 2018], State level Students Journalism Congress on ‘Fake News, Misinformation and Disinformation [29-30 January 2019] and three workshops, namely Personality Development [7-8 September 2018], Sports Journalism [4-5 February 2019] and Public Relations [12-13 February 2019].  Department has also organized one day seminar jointly with Department of Mass Communication, Punyashloke Ahilyadevi Holkar Solapur University, Solapur and Kolhapur Press Club on the topic ‘Election and Media’ [13 March 2019]. The students and faculty visited on 7th January 2019 to Belgaum, ‘Karnataka Tarun Bharat headquarter, to celebrate’ Marathi Patrakar Din’ and understand the centenary journey of this Marathi newspaper. Daily Tarun Bharat also celebrated its centenary year in 2019. The department also conducted several guest lectures on media persons and alumni of the department.

So far, department has received total 3,71,23,755/- funds from Maharashtra State Government (2,25,00,000/-) , Shivaji university

( 1,25,00,000) national level bodies like ICSSR (2,50,000/-) and also from international organization like UNICEF (16,88,755/-). Research project (1,85,000/-). 2 research scholars 1 PG student received funds for short-term-project under UGC-STRIDE scheme.
