The School of Nanoscience and Technology (SNST) was established during the Golden Jubilee Year of Shivaji University, June 2012. The department currently offers B.Sc. - M.Sc. five year integrated course in Nanoscience and Technology. The SNST intends to cultivate an interdisciplinary approach and bring together major science branches like Physics, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Mathematics and Electronics under one umbrella. The Nanoworld is emerging as a small world with enormous opportunities. Objects in the range of 1-100 nm exhibit unexpected chemical, physical and biological properties. These astonishing new properties are the gateway to innovation in a variety of fields including chemistry, biology, physics, materials and environmental sciences, engineering and medicine.

According to the National Science Foundation (NSF), USA, a plenty of jobs will be generated in nanotechnology by the year 2015. Hence developing an exciting and comprehensive Nanoscience Education Program combining cutting-edge desktop nanofabrication instruments with a stimulating curriculum is need of an hour. Developing SNST as one of the most comprehensive in India, making it an obvious choice to be a hub for Nano-materials science and technology, with an array of high-tech, state-of-the-art characterization facilities, and an experienced and highly qualified team is the motto of the Centre.

Nanoscience and Technology (B.Sc.-M.Sc.) is a ten-semester integrated course spread over the period of five years. The School of Nanoscience and technology, Shivaji University, Kolhapur, offers this course on its campus. It is designed to offer in-depth knowledge of the subject starting from its basic concepts to the state of art nanotechnologies in use today. Students are also provided extensive laboratory training on the course content and the current requirements of industries and Research and Development. In the final semester every student has to undertake a project, which is based on the specialization, he/she opts for amongst the areas like Nano-physics, Nano-chemistry and Nano-biotechnology.

The course has new B.Sc. and M.Sc. structure with 5 papers in each semester having 3 credits each and 6th paper is non-credit based paper. In addition each semester will have practical examination. After successful completion of first three years (semesters I to VI), the candidate will get B.Sc. Nanoscience and Technology degree. In this degree course the syllabus of First and Second years of B.Sc. Physics Chemistry, Biotechnology, Electronic and Mathematics is covered. The candidate may take exit after 3 years of successful completion of the course. The M.Sc. program follows same structure with including domain specializations in Nano-physics, Nano-chemistry and Nano-biotechnology.
