Dear Friends,
Established on 18th November 1962, Shivaji
University has accomplished forty eight efficacious years. It was named after
the great Maratha warrior Chh. Shivaji, not only because he symbolizes the
pride of the Marathi population but more so, because his rule was the dawn of
a new era. Chh. Shivaji imbibed pride in the depressed masses and developed
confidence in them. His goal was to establish an egalitarian and just society,
where every individual would get an opportunity to progress. The same
principle was behind the establishment of Shivaji University. People in the
southern Maharashtra were deprived from the education and therefore had meager
opportunities to develop. Through the establishment of Shivaji University the
doors of the development and progress were opened.
During last forty eight years University has
developed in strength and magnitude. It has started number of courses.
According to one survey, Shivaji University ranks 18th at the national level,
as far as academic courses are concerned.
University also has a creditable record in the research activities. The
Department of Biotechnology has gained 15th rank among the top twenty BT
Schools survey, 2010 made by ‘Biospectrums’. The ranking of the department is
10th by faculty score and 18th by infrastructure score. According to the
survey conducted by ‘Current Science’ Shivaji University is placed on the 26th
rank in the list of 44 National Universities. This ranking is given on the
basis of research conducted at the University.
Yet another achievement of the University is the
financial assistance it received from Department of Science and Technology
under the scheme of Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence
(PURSE). University has secured Rs. nine crores, as an incentive to the
research and development activities of the University.
These accomplishments of the University were
possible because of the intelligent, committed and resourceful faculty and
students. I hope they will continue to contribute their academic share and
lead the University to greater height.
