Shivaji University Central Co-operative Consumers' Store Limited, Vidyanagar, Kolhapur

Shivaji University Central Co-operative Consumers’ Store is one of the important service units of the University. It was established to cater the needs of the University administration, as well as families and students residing on the campus. For last 43 years the Store is constantly providing products like, stationery, electronic equipments, sports equipment and household provisions. It has maintained the quality of goods and has earned reputation as good service provider. It also has a Xerox centre, STD booths, and courier service. The Publications store of the University is also administered by the Consumers Store. As Consumers store is the only provision store on the campus it fulfills the needs of families and students residing on the campus.

In 1966-67, Shivaji University, Kolhapur, was included in the Union Government's scheme, formulated at the recommendations of the UGC for promoting the growth of the cooperative stores at the University level. Accordingly, Shivaji University Central Cooperative Consumers' Store Limited was established in March, 1967.Shivaji University's first Vice-Chancellor Honrable Dr. Appasaheb Pawar was the chief promoter of this Store.

The Stores’ Board of Directors has three classes of members:
(1) Shivaji University 'A' class 6 Directors
(2) Affiliated Colleges 'B' class 2 Directors
(3) Consumer Stores of the Affiliated Colleges 'C' class 1 Directors
'A' Class members are nominated by the Hon. Vice-Chancellor of the University as per the powers vested in him under the bye-laws of the Consumers Store. One of the members nominated by him is the Chairman of the Store. The Board has tenure of 5 years. As on 31.3.2008, there were 30 members of the Store. The total share capital of the Consumers Store is Rs.36, 750/.

The Consumers Store supplies various goods and provisions with minimum commission of 3.5% to the Men's Hostel, Girls Hostel and Vidyarthi Bhavan, run under the 'Earn and Learn' scheme. Even vegetables required by the Hostels are provided by the Consumers stores.

The current turnover of the Consumers store is Rs.3, 37, 48,752/-, &its working capital stands at Rs.68 lakh. The Store has paid dividend to its members continuously for last six years. During 2009-2010, the Store has earned a net profit of Rs.1, 87,350/- Hence the Consumers Store donated a sum of Rs.2, 00,000/- to the University's Research and Development Fund; total amount being Rs.3, 46,800.
