Workshop on “Panchganga Basin Pollution Prevention” in Shivaji University

Panchaganga Basin Pollution Prevention Workshop was jointly organized by Shivaji University, Kolhapur, Rotary Club of Karveer and Zillha Parishad, Kolhapur on 28th May, 2010 at V.S.Khandekar Auditorium, Shivaji University, Kolhapur. This was the first mega event organized in collaboration with University, Rotary Club and Zilla Parishad for the officials of Gram Panchayat, Sarapanch, and Village officers of 174 villages in Kolhapur district. Professor D. T. Shirke, Registrar, Shivaji University, Kolhapur gave welcome speech and introduced the guests. Shri. Gurudatta Bhakta, Rotary District Governer, explained the objectives of the theme of workshop. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Rajendra Singh by watering the plant.
During the workshop Shri. Vijay Singhal, Commissioner of Kolhapur Municipal Corporation was felicitated by Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Professor N. J. Pawar for receiving the Hon’ble Prime Minister award. One reference book on Water Pollution , prepared by faculty members of different departments of University was published by the auspicious hands of Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Professor N. J. Pawar . Dr. Rajendra Singh was the Chief Guest of this function who delivered keynote address of this function. In his address, he underlined the importance of water conservation. He has given special emphasis on community driven approach of river basin study and management. He also discovrsed the need of collaborative work between academic people of The University, Administrative people and Non Governmental Organizations for prevention of river pollution. He feels young that if the generation and elected leaders take initiative for prevention of pollution, it is not a difficult task.
In the presidential remark Professor N. J. Pawar, Vice-Chancellor expressed the views on the role of University in water management and water conservation. He took the review of the work of the university with regard the water conservation and water management. He agreed to give necessary inputs for river water basin management in terms of research and expertise. He also said that the university research work will be useful for the society.
In the second session Dr. P. D. Raut provided the information about Panchaganga Rivers and its tributaries and also referred to the activities of people responsible for river water pollution. He discussed the research on the Panchaganga river water undertaken in the university and suggested some remedial measures for it. Shri. Uday Gaikawad of Vigyan Prabhodini threw light on various aspects of Panchaganga river water pollution, problems of tannery industry and its rehabilitation, KT weirs, etc. with probable solutions. Shri. N. S. Nanaware presented the work of Kolhapur Zillha Parishad. Shri. Mane, field officer, MPCB, presented various activities of Pollution Control Board and its initiatives for pollution control and abatement. Shri. Vijay Singhal, Commissioner of Kolhapur Municipal Corporation was the chairman of the session.
Dr. P. D. Raut, Head Department of Environmental Science, Shivaji Uinversity Kolhapur proposed the vote of thanks.
