A National Seminar on Advanced Materials

A national seminar on advanced materials (NSAM-2010) was held in the Department of Physics of Shivaji University Kolhapur during March, 19-20, 2010. The seminar received an overwhelming response for NSAM-2010, by receiving 110 abstracts. Around 160 delegates registered for the conference. Nanotechnology based on so-called advanced materials has been the subject of much hype over the past few years, and today we see bigger picture of science and technology based on such materials: Any given search engine will produce around 2 million hits. Nanotechnology is on the way to becoming the FIRST trillion dollar market. It influences almost every facet of everyday life from security to medicine. At the nanometer scale, properties become size dependent. New properties enable new applications. Nevertheless, diminishing dimensions of the advanced materials pose new challenges. The objective of the NSAM 2010 was to provide a forum to bring together a cluster of renowned scientists and major research groups working in the field of advanced materials and applications to cross-fertilize ideas, knowledge and experience on the theme, which encompasses the areas of Nanomaterials, Catalytic materials, Materials for Nanosensors, Solar cell materials, Photonic materials, Advanced semiconducting materials, Nanocomposites, Advanced functional materials, Materials for space applications, Carbon nanotubes, etc. It provided an excellent opportunity for the scientists and delegates as well as professionals of related disciplines to meet and exchange experiences. The seminar provided an excellent platform for the participants to know, interact & exchange ideas mutually to discuss new trends and determine challenges ahead in the field of advanced materials.

The Inaugural function was held on 19th March, 2010 at 10.30 a.m. Dr. D.P. Amalnerkar, Executive director of C-MET, Pune was the Chief Guest and Prof. A.V. Rao, Professor and Head, Department of Physics, presided over the function. Two day’s technical program was splited in to 5 sessions. There were 8 ITs by: Dr. D.P. Amalner, CMET, Pune, Dr. B.B. Kale, CMET, Pune,Dr. C.A. Betty, BARC, Mumbai Dr. P.A. Hassan, BARC, Mumbai,Dr. P.K. Khanna, CMET, Pune,Prof. C.H. Bhosale, Shivaji University,Dr. S.D. Dhole, Pune University,Prof. C.D. Lokhande, Shivaji University.

In the poster session the NSAM 2010, held during 04.30 pm to 06.30 pm on 20 March 2010, in all 40 posters were displayed. Poster session was inaugurated at the hands of Dr. C.A. Betty. The best three posters were judged for the prizes by the Expert Committee comprising of Prof. V.R Puri, Prof. C.H. Bhosale, Prof. C.D. Lokhande, Dr. C.A. Betty and Dr. P.A. Hassan.
