Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy of Shivaji
University organized two days national seminar on ‘Socio-Economic Status of
Muslim in India. Seminar was organized on 15th & 16th January at the
Humanities Auditorium. Dr. Asgar Ali Engineer, eminent reformist and thinker
inaugurated the seminar. Prof. Dr. Ashok Chousalkar, Head Dept of Political
Science chaired the inaugural session. Dr. R. G. Dandge, Director, Centre for
Study of Social Exclusion & Inclusive Policy welcomed the guest and explained
the objectives of the seminar. In his inaugural address Prof. Asgar Ali
Engineer said, “in democracy it is expected that all sections of society get
equal opportunity but in India it is not so. The Muslim middle class is very
weak; there are very few Muslims in trade, commerce and industry. In the list
of first twenty industrialists one would hardly find a Muslim. The attitude of
Muslims is gradually changing and now Muslims have taken seriously modern
education. The policy of reservation has helped the backward castes, but what
about Muslims in India? Assistant Director Dr. Amita Kanegaonkar proposed vote
of thanks. Nilima Desai, compared the program.
In the first technical session five papers were presented. Supriya Gandhi,
Aparna Kamble, Dr. Sikandar Jamadar, Prof. Sallauddin Kureshi presented their
research papers. Prof. F. H. Bennur presided over the session. In the second
technical session Anwar Rajan, Dr. Bharati Patil, Shabana Memon, Sonal Chonde
presented their papers on different themes. Sallauddin Kureshi chaired this
session. Scholars from all parts of India participated in the Seminar. On the
2nd day that is 16th Jan remaining research papers were presented.
