It is
necessary to expose the reality of various projects through ‘sting operation’
going on in the name of ‘Development’ said the leader of Rashtriya Jana
Andolan Samanvaya and senior social activist Medha Patkar.
She was the “Guest Speaker” in the Guest Lecture Series organized by Centre
for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, Shivaji University
Kolhapur. She spoke on the topic entitled, ‘Development Projects- Social
Exclusion and Discrimination’. The function was presided over by Dr. B. M.
Hirdekar, Controller of Examination, Shivaji University, Kolhapur. Senior
Freedom Fighter Datta Shinde was present on the occasion.
Presently, there are many projects undertaken in the name of ‘Development’.
Development Projects are implemented for the benefit of wealthy, Capitalists
and rulers/Government. However ‘displaced’, due to these projects are
neglected. Those who fight for the cause of ‘displaced’ are nagged as opposed
to development. There is large scale marketing of water. Instead of supplying
water to common people, it is supplied to corporate sector, that is how
development is taking place. However, due to this many are excluded. Multi
National Companies are selling water for billion dollars. Water is purchased
at the rate of 55 paise per litre and sold at the rate of Rs 5 to Rs 10 per
litre. Here the monetary transaction is taking place not for excluded but to
safeguard the interest of the capitalists.
Same is the case of Energy and Electricity sectors. Therefore it is necessary
to challenge each ‘development project’ undertaken in the name of
‘development’. It would be essential to make just and equal distribution of
the a available natural recourses. Due to this framers will incur proper cost
for their agricultural production. Besides, it is necessary to start the
process of alternate development planning in the country.
Ms. Patkar also gave examples of Narmada Bachao Andolan, Neera-Deodhar
Jalstrot Andolan, Hirachandani Gardens, ‘IRB’ etc to the audience. She
satisfactorily answered various questions posed by the students and teachers.
The function was held at Humanities Auditorium. Prof. R. G. Dandge, Ag.
Registrar, Shivaji University, welcomed and introduced the Chief Guest, Dr.
Amita Kanegaonkar proposed vote of thanks.
