Under
U.G.C.D.R.S.-I SAP, Department of Botany, Shivaji University, Kolhapur has
held a One Day Workshop Mangrove Awareness for Post Graduate Students, on 15th
and 16th January, 2009. The workshop was inaugurated at the auspicious hands
of Prof. A. A. Dange, Director B.C.U.D. In his inaugural address, Prof. Dange
stressed the need of integrated research approach to the study of Mangrove
involving Botanists, Environmentalists and Economists. Prof. K. Kathiresan
(Centre for Marine Biology, Annamalai University, T.N.) delivered a keynote
address on Mangroves. In his lucid speech, Prof. Kathiresan explained various
aspects of Mangroves and a need for conservation of Mangroves. He also gave
idea about attempts carried out for conservation of Mangroves by his
institutes. He appreciated the idea of Botany Department to hold workshop on
this important plant group and hoped that the participants will be immensely
benefited by the workshop. Convener of the workshop, Prof. A. B. Sabale
extended warm welcome to the guests and participants. Prof. G. B. Dixit made
an introduction about departmental activities and Prof. N. S. Chavan,
secretary of the workshop, proposed the vote of thanks. In the afternoon
session Dr. D. D. Kurlapkar and Prof. P. D. Chavan delivered lectures on
Mangrove Ecology and Physiology of Mangroves. Prof. B. A. Karadge and Prof. S.
R. Yadav chaired these lecture sessions.
On
16th January the participants made actual field studies of Mangroves on the
seashores in and around Malvan (Dist. Sindhudurga). Prof. S. R. Yadav, Prof.
A. B. Sable and Prof. S. S. Kamble guided the field studies. The workshop was
concluded at Malvan. Thirty five Post graduate students from various centers
participated in the workshop.
