The Centre of
inter disciplinary studies in Social Sciences in collaboration woth Academy of
political studies Pune organized a national Seminar on culture in transition
on 9th and 10th Jan. 2009 at Bhashabhavan , Kolhapur.
The seminar
was inaugurated by Dr. M.M. Salunkhe Hon. Vice Chancellor of the University
who pointed out that in the globalize world, different problems of cultural
transition should be properly studied. He specially stressed the role of folk
arts in cultural transition.
In his key
note address Dr. Satish Poudwal of Hyderabad discussed various aspects of
cultural transition in India. Paying rich tributes to the memories of Prof.
D.D. Kosambi, he pointed out that it was Kosambi who tried to highlight the
role of cultural syncretism in making of Indian culture. He held that there
was considerable cultural activity and dynamism among Dalit and backward
castes that challenged hegemony of the upper castes. Indian bourgeoisie had
come of age also but we have to measure the amount of independence it enjoys
today. There is a challenge of consumerism to culture.
Mr. Datta
Desai introduced the guests and Dr. V. B. Jugale welcomed them. Mr. Sharas
Navare proposed heartdy vote of thanks.
