News in Brief

  • International Conference : Departments of Chemistry and Physics are going to jointly organise an International conference in the month of January 2009 and it is expected that a few Nobel Prize winners would attend this conference.

  • M. S. W. classes began : The University has started M.S.W. course from this academic year and 22 Students  have taken admission to this course. At present, Dr. R. B. Patil Professor of Sociology is the Co-ordinator of the course. The M.S.W. classes have begun in the second week of August 2008.

  • Visiting Lecture Series :Professor and prominent critic Mr. Digmbar Padhye and well- known dramatist Professor Datta Bhagat delivered a series of lectures on ‘Sociology and Literature ‘ and  ‘ Modern Marathi Literature’ under the visiting professor scheme on 13th Aug to 29th Aug in Marathi Department.

  • Appointment of Dr. P.A. Attar as Professor & Head of English Department : Prof. Dr. P. A. Attar has been appointed as Head of English Department in Shivaji University Kolhapur. Dr Attar has worked as a lecturer in Venutai Chavan College,Karad for 25 years. After there he has also worked as Principal in S.C.College,Kotoli for last two years.

  •  A Drama performance on Einstein : A performance of the play Einstein by Gabrial Emanual was held on 10th Sept 2008 at V. S. Khandekar Bhasha Bhavan. This Drama was translated by Sharad Navare. The play was directed and acted by Sharad Bhuthadia.

  • Publication of the book : “Shivaji University: Innovation and change”: A book prepared by shivaji University “Shivaji University innovation and Change” was published on 15th August 2008.
    The book was released by Dr. M. M. Salunkhe who explained the philosophy of change that was responsible for the progress of the University. He thanked all the members of the editorial board for preparing the book in time.

  • Ganesh festival celebrated : The students of Dr. Appasaheb Pawar Bhavan of the University organised the Ganesh festival in the University. As a part of the festival the students organised lectures in the evening in which prominent speakers were: Dr. B. M. Hirdekar, Controller of Examinations, Dr. Rajendra Kankariya, Registrar and Dr. Ashok Chousalkar, Head Deptt. of Political Science of the University Dr. S.S. Mahajan Commerce Deptt. Students also organised cultural program & competitions on this occasion.

  • Dr. Rohini Tukdev’s participation in an International Seminar: Dr. Rohini Tukdev, Department of Marathi, Kasturbai Walchand College , Sangli presented a paper entitled “Between Colonial and National Marathi Novel : Commemorating resistance of 1857” at international seminar,organized by Aberdeen University of,Scotland (U.K). The seminar was held from 8th July to 10th July  2008. The seminar was organized on the theme, ‘The Novel and Its Border.’ In this seminar scholars from distinguished countries presented their papers. In her paper Dr.Rohini Tukdev discussed various aspects of novel.

  • Dr. G.M. Pawar honored with A.K. Priyolkar Award: Dr.G.M.Pawar a leading critic of Marathi and Professor and Ex- Head of the Marathi Department Shivaji University, Kolhapur, has been conferred with A.K.Priyolkar Award by Mumbai University. A.K.Priyolkar was a prominent research scholar in Linguistics of Nineteenth Century and Medieval Literature in Marathi. The award is conferred to commemorate his work and memories. It is conferred every year to the research scholars who have been contributing to the field of research in Literature. Dr. G.M.Pawar is also honored for his work entitled ‘Maharshi Vitthal Ramaji Shinde : Life and Work’.

  • Meet of the Alumni : A meet of the Alumni of the Marathi Department was organized. The chief guest for the function was a leading dramatist Professor Datta Bhagat. Dr. A. A. Dange the B.C.U.D. Director.Shivaji University,Kolhapur presided over the function. Actor Sanjay Mohite, former student of the Department was to elicited eliciated for his recent achievement of Maharashtra Times Natya Gaourov Purskar.

  • Semester system implements to all the departments : Shivaji University has taken initiative to introduce flexibility. As part of it University has decided to introduce semester system to all the departments. The semester system was applicable to the science departments, but now Arts, Commerce & Social Science departments   have also been included in the scheme. This scheme will facilitate minute study of all subjects by the students. Under this scheme continuous internal assessment of the students would be done. Similarly the syllabus of the courses would be changed according to changing circumstances.

  • The student’s of Shivaji University will use bicycle in University campus : Shivaji University has decided to purchase 500 bicycles, which would be used by students & faculty to travel within the university campus. Shivaji University has a huge campus & roads of 150 km. walking from one department to the other, is a tedious job. Hence Hon. Vice Chancellor has decided to give bicycles to the students for the use within the campus. This will also help to protect the environment of the campus.

  • The Department of Law organised two lectures of Mr. Sharad Mirashi on Municipal Administration and Anti corruption movement on 13th and 16th of Sept. 2008.

  • Dr. V.G. Nandealkar an eminent professor of Political Science from Pune delivered a lecture on Indian Administration to the students of pre IAS coaching of the University on 13th Sept. 2008.

  • A congregation of fast and present students from Solapur was organised on 31st Aug. 2008, Dr. S. H. Pawar Vice-Chancellor, D.Y. Patil University and Mr. Ranjitsniga Mohite-Patil, MLC were present on the occasion.

  • A congregate on of past and present students of Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur and Solapur was organised on 31st Aug. 2008 Shri Vinay Kore, Minister for Unconventional Energy inaugurated the program. Shri Yuraj Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati Chaired the Program. Dr. Milind Mankar demonstrated hypnotism to the students, who well attended the congregation.
