| Administrative Responsibilities |
-
Vice-Chancellor, Shivaji University, Kolhapur - February 26, 2010 onwards.
-
Head, Department of Geology, University of Pune, January 2008 - February 25, 2010
-
Joint Coordinator, Department of Environmental Science, University of Pune, (1993 – 1999).
-
Coordinator, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India sponsored FIST programme (2000-2005).
-
Coordinator, University Grants Commission sponsored DRS-SAP programme, 2007 - 2010 (February).
As a Professor and Head, Dr. Pawar has successfully developed several research programmes in the Department of Geology, designed and implemented new courses and generated lot of funds through several funding agencies for the infrastructure development. Under his leadership as a Coordinator of DST and UGC programmes, the Department of Geology, recently gained recognition as “DST-FIST sponsored” from Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and by University Grants Commission as “DRS-I, SAP (Special Assistance Program) funded”. He motivated the faculty members to participate in the national level research programmes launched by Department of Science and Technology, such as Deep Continental Crust (DCS) with financial support of Rs. 16.5 lakhs and Science of Shallow Subsurface (SSS) with Rs.36 lakhs. He was instrumental in getting DRS (Departmental Research Support) programme of University Grants Commission with funding of Rs. 45 lakhs. Besides this he strengthened industry-academia interaction by involving the faculty in the programmes of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Commission) Energy Centre (Rs. 1.5 crores) and Reliance Industries (over 10 lakhs). Through these initiatives Dr Pawar has developed state of the art infrastructure in the Department of Geology, which is one of the unique in the country. Similarly, Dr. Pawar has launched the programmes for helping the students by formulating “employment cell” in the department through which campus interviews have been conducted for placements of the students. Professor Pawar was also largely responsible for modifying the admission process in geology by introducing entrance examination and also designed and introduced new one year diploma courses in Geology such as “Geoenvironmental Appraisal and Management” and “Geotechnology” both attracting the students from Geology, Environmental Science and Civil Engineering streams. His ideas have helped in inculcating the spirit of competitiveness in the faculty as well as students.
Besides Geology, in the full time administrative capacity (1993-1999) as a Joint coordinator of Department of Environmental Science, Dr. Pawar developed and implemented interdisciplinary courses by involving faculty members from all science departments. By inviting contributory faculty (in absence of full time permanent faculty), he could successfully implement full time M.Sc. programme and also developed and strengthened infrastructure by involving industry and through research projects.
Professor Pawar has made important contributions to national level research programmes launched by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. He is active researcher in the nationwide programme on “Science of Shallow Subsurface”, developed by DST. Through this research programme as a Principal Investigator, Dr. Pawar received funds worth Rs.36 lakhs for working on heavy metals in Ankaleshwar oil field and industrial area. He has developed collaborative research programme with Osaka City University, Japan on the “design and development of water quality data logger sensor system”, which will be very useful in generating real time data on water quality from different water sources. Presently, he in involved in multi-university international research programme on “solving environmental conflicts in coastal areas: global change, human mobility and sustainable urban development” a collaborative project between universities in European Union, India and South-East Asia.
