Year of
Establishment: 1964
About the Department:
The Department of
Zoology as a post-graduate department came into
existence in the month of July 1964. We run
classes for M.Sc. and M.Phil. The intake capacity
of the students per year is 40. Syllabus of M.Sc.
course is strictly based on UGC guide lines.
SPECIALIZATION:
The department has adaped a set of
courses leading to two streams as
per
UGC Guided Syllabus for M.Sc. Zoology
-
Organismic Zoology.
-
Reductionist Zoology.
Where
instructions are offered in Biosystematic,
Quantitative biology, Endocrinology, Molecular
Cell Biology, Genetics, Evolution, Environmental
Biology. These are the core courses Under the
stream Organismic Zoology we teach Biology of
Parasites, Insect Physiology, Aquaculture and
Fisheries, Wild Life Conservation Biology,
Structure and Function of invertebrates,
Comparative Anatomy of Vertebrates, Population
Ecology and Animal Behavior. Under the stream
Reductionist Zoology we offer Immunology, Gene and
differentiation, Molecular Genetics, Molecular
Biology, Enzymology, Physiological Chemistry,
Comparative Physiology and Reproductive
Technology.

Research
Activities: |
|
The Department
has excelled in its research standards and its
highly qualified faculty offers post-graduate
courses like M.Sc., M.Sc. (Partly by papers
and partly by research), M.Phil. and Ph.D.
programmes under identified thrust areas in
|
- Comparative
physiology and reproductive biology of
vertebrates and invertebrates.
-
Ecophysiological studies on the role of
environmental stresses due to pollution.
- Sports
physiology.
- Problems
related to molluscan and insect pests and
their control management.
- Use of
medicinal plants in cure of diseases.
- Ergonomical
studies on industrial workers.
- Problems
related to sericulture practices.
-
Hydro-biological and productivity studies on
water bodies.
- Waste
recycling by employing invertebrate animals.
- Cell
senescence, cancer biology and aging.
More than
105 candidates have been awarded the degree of
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). Besides about
55 M.Phil. and 30 M.Sc. (By research) degrees
have been awarded. Presently 37 candidates
are working for their Ph.D. and 7 for their
M.Phil. Degrees on the above referred
specified problems. Over 400 research papers
have been published in journals of National
and International repute. About 600 papers
were read at the National and International
Symposia / conferences. This commendable
research out put was faciliated, through
generous grants in the form of research
projects from various funding agencies in
India such as UGC, DST, DOE, ICMR and CSIR.
The Department is organizing from time to time
summer institutes, symposia, seminars and
refresher courses to up-date the knowledge in
zoology for the students, faculty and college
teachers.
The
Department has produced dynamic personalities
who have won laurels in various fields at
national and international levels. Late Prof.
A.T. Varute, past head of the department
chaired as Vice-chancellor of the Shivaji
University, Kolhapur. Many students of this
department are working as Professor Scientists
in different Universities, State, National
Level Institutes. In addition, many students
are class I & II officers in state and central
Government offices, occupying higher posts
like Bank Managers, Sales Tax Officers, Forest
Officers and Shining in their fields in India
and abroad. |

MoU WITH
GOA UNIVERSITY:- |
|
In recent
years Biodiversity branch of biology is
developing fast. Researchers and Scientists
have taken keen interest in studying various
aspects of this branch. The study of
Biodiversity of marine ecesystem is front line
research area. Therefore, this Department has
made MoU with Goa University, Panaji, Goa and
also trying to make MoU with Dr. Babasaheb
Ambedkar, Marathwada University, Aurangabad
for the use of their marine Research
Laboratories oacated at Ratnagiri.
|
|
SERICULTURE:
- |
|
In recent
years, attempts are also made to develop a
Science of Sericulture in the Department. The
climatic conditions are suitable to silk worms
and hence for silk production. Students
response is extremely well to this new
subject. The said activity will be extended to
farmers so that one of the economically
favourable avenue can be opened – up. |

Introduction to
Curriculum: - |
|
Syllabus of
M.Sc. Zoology |
|
A
two years (Four Semesters) M.Sc.
Zoology course is constituted in view of the
recent trends in Zoology. In recent years the
subject Zoology has emerged due to the
integration of many classical and newly
developed branches of biology and its allied
subjects. A cursory glance reveals that the
content curricula of a dozen of departments
overlap with that of department of Zoology.
Hence the department of Zoology has adopted a
set of courses leading to two streams of
students. One leading to "Organismic
Zoology" which deals with studies at the
level of whole organism or populations and
communities. The other one leading to "Reductionist
Zoology" which deals with studies at the
cellular and molecular level of organization.
It is expected that the students should choose
such of these courses which would lead them to
acquire expertise in one of the two streams.
In the curriculum the efforts have been made
to remove the present conflict between M.Sc.
in integrated Life Sciences and M.Sc. in
Zoology.
It is also hoped that the contents of
these courses would meet the demands and needs
of the country in general and zoologist in
particular.
N.B.:
The
entire M.Sc. Course will be covered in 16
Theory papers and 8 practical courses during
four semesters. For each semester there will
be 4 theory papers and 2 practicals. Each
paper / practical will be of 100 marks.
For
each paper, there will be 4 hours of contact
periods for 12 weeks.
Each
practical will be of six periods of 60
minutes per week. As for as possible, the
practical courses will be based on
respective theory papers and subject to
revision / updating from time to time
depending on needs.
In
semester IV, in lieu of one practical, the
students will have to submit Project report
/ Review article as per the schedule given
by the Department in that year.
There
will be two seminars per week. Each seminar
will be of one period duration of 60
minutes.
50:50
per cent seats will be reserved for two
streams (Organismic Zoology and Reductionist
Zoology). The admission to these streams
will be on the basis of choise and merit
(i.e. total marks obtained at the M.Sc.
Part-I) of the students.
The
bibliographic list will be periodically
updated for all the papers as newer
information flow in.
There
will be compulsory field visits and study
tours during the course of study.
