The Deptt. of Sports
& Physical
Education
of the Shivaji University has all the necessary
facilities, with keeping in mind the importance of
health and physical fitness & that a sound mind
dwells in a healthy body, it has a well equipped
Gymnasium, Athletics stadium, 04 Basketball hard
courts, cricket ground with 04 wickets, 01 Hockey
Court, Tennis Court, 04 Volley Ball Courts, 02
Handball courts, 01 Football Ground, 02 Indoor
Badminton Courts, 04 Table Tennis Tables (Indoor),
04 Kabbadi Courts, 02 Kho-Kho grounds & Indoor
strengthening & weight Training Gymnasiums are
present. In
addition to these, there is also facility for
Wrestling, Judo, Rope Malkhamb, Chess, Gymnastics
etc.
All the above games have
sports equipment of International standard & is
accessible to all students, who may be interested
in improving their health as well as to all those
who are interested in participating in sports
competitions. These students are selected on
merit by proper trials.
The Incharge of Sports &
Physical Education Deptt. is Mr. P. J. Maskar. The
University has appointed Athletic & Cricket
coaches for coaching facility throughout the year.

ASHWAMEDH -
2001: |

Shivaji University hosted 'ASHWAMEDH - 2001', the
inter University sports meet in month of November
2001, the event which provides
Opportunity
to youths from various Universities to display
their skills in various sports events. These
sporting events are also accompanied with the AIDS
awareness campaign, to promote the awareness
about prevention and control of AIDS. The
Ashwamedha–2001 was inaugurated by Honorable P. C.
Alexander, Governor of Maharashtra, who said that
the intention with which these sporting events
were, launched, has been Successful. "Overall
development of the character of the youths,
building of sporting spirit and to capacitate the
Youth to combat the challenges of the life were
the main intentions to commission this event, said
Governor, who recalled the glorious tradition of
Kolhapur city , the hub of social and sporting
events. Also present during the opening ceremony
were Vice Chancellor Dr. M G Takawale, Smt. Ackama
Alexander, Health Minister Digvijay Khanwilkar,
Higher and
technical
education minister Dilip Walse-Patil, Pro Vice
Chancellor Dr. VM Chavan and dignitaries from
various fields were present during this ceremony
which was marked by the colorful march by the
participants and also with the traditional
cultural programs. The special memorabilia was
published by hands of Ackama Alexandar. More than
1500, youths from 17 Universities participated in
this event, organized on Krida Maharishi MeghNath
Nageshkar sports complex, which was capacitated
with all the requirements to arrange the events,
including the special athletic track and wrestling
ground, it was for the first time in the history
of these events that wrestling was enlisted in
these sporting events. Also the NSS cadres in
Sangli,Satara, Kolhapur and Solapur had arranged
bicycle rally to enlighten masses on AIDS and its
implications. Also Photo and poster exhibition was
arranged in the sports complex.
Shivaji University won general
championship
of
Ashwamedha – 2001 with winning 40 medals, followed
by Mumbai University (22 medals) and Pune ( 14
medals) . Sarita Patil, Arun Helwade, Pandurang
Varute of Shivaji University, Swati Gunule of
Nagpur University and Nivedita Kardikar of Mumbai
University were awarded best sportsman in various
events .The awards were conferred in a grand
ceremony on Nov. 30, 2001 by hands of Guardian
Minister Dr. Patangrao Kadam, Finance Minister
Jayant Patil, Health Minister Digvijay Khanwilkar
and other luminaries including VC Dr. MG Takawale
and Pro VC Dr. VM Chavan .Dr. Kadam while
addressing the participants assured that the
sportsman winning medals in inter University
competitions will be given preference in jobs and
he added that business houses will be requested to
sour the sportsman, by providing jobs. Finance
Minister Jayant Patil assured that state
government will provide all the assistance to the
plans for capacitating sport complex.
Shivaji University had arranged these
events for first time. Thirty two committees under
leadership of Vice Chancellor and Pro Vice
Chancellor toiled to arrange the events, and the
efforts of University were appreciated by the
Chancellor himself.
