  Introduction:

Sericulture is one of the interdisciplinary branch of applied sciences.  It is an agrobased cottage industry and has a history of more than 4000 years. At present times,  the Sericulture has a great relevance and the potential for self-employment in the rural Maharashtra.  In the State, however, the Sericulture is still in it's infancy.  In recent times, the Government of Maharashtra with the massive assistance from the World  Bank has initiaed Sericultural activity an a large scale and accordingly it has prepared a long term plan for it's spread and sustainable growth,  Visualising the margin of profit,  many large industrial establishments are venturing in this field on a grand scale.

          Presently no University in Maharashtra (Agricultural and Non-Agricultural) imparts instructions leading to a degree or a post graduate degree in Sericulture.  Hence,  it would be appropriate at this stage to start post-graduate  course in Sericulture in the SHIVAJI UNIVERSITY.  This would be helpful in providing the trained manpower needed for the Sericultural  activities in the State.

  Subject/Research Specialization:

Reasearch Specilizations are Silkworm Biology, Silkworm Rearing, Moriculture, Economics and Management of Sericultural activities.

  Eligibility :-

The two year P.G. Course is open to a candidate who has passed his/her B.Sc. Degree Examination with a minimum of 50 % marks for open catagory and   45 % marks for reserve catogory with  Principal Zoology /Botany /Biochemistry/MicroBiology/Plant Protection/Seed Technology  OR  those candidates who have passed B.Sc. Degrgee with 50% marks with Botany and/OR Biochemistry and /OR Zoology and/OR MicroBiology and/OR Plant Protection and/OR Seed Technology either at B.Sc. I OR B.Sc. II level OR candidates of B.Sc. (Agriculture )   OR  B.Tech with Life Science as a major Subject are also eligible for M.Sc. Sericulture admission.. 
  Admission Procedure:-

All eligible applications are required to appear, at their own cost, for the entrance examination consisting of written test of 100 marks which will be conducted at the Shivaji University , Kolhapur., the date of which is declared in the local daily newspapers.The merit list based on the score points will be displayed on the notice board in the Department of  Zoology.

Practicals VIII- In lieu of this Practical (VIII) the report of infield / in plant training,  project report/ dissertation and viva-voce an both (30+30+20+20=100)

 Fees                         For M.Sc. I year Rs. 5000/- and  for M.Sc. II year Rs. 5000/-

Guidance to the farmer is given, regular field visits of students are arranged to study, suggest regarding raring of silkworm.
