The Department of Environmental Science is established in 1986 in Shivaji University with Ph.D. in Environmental Science. Consecutively the Department started M.Sc. course in 1989. Today the Department hosts five courses as M.Sc., M.Phil., Ph.D., PG Diploma in Environmental Protection and Management and PG Diploma in Industrial Safety, Health and Environment.

Study Tour: A study tour of 10 days duration to industry and places of environmental importance is compulsory. A report of the study tour is to be submitted.

• In-plant training of 3 weeks is compulsory and a Report to be submitted to the Department with due Certification of the industry where training is sought.

• Minimum 5 Industrial Visits are compulsory.

ISHEP 6 : Project

One year compulsory Project on Industrial Safety to be completed before Theory examination and a  Report to be submitted to the Department

Environmental laboratories with sophisticated field monitoring facility for water, soil, noise pollution. The department provides consultancy services for air, water and soil monitoring to industries and local people.
The department has EduSat Interactive Terminal. The department has established the “Centre for Marine Environment” (CME)  at Malvan, Dist. Sindhudurg.

• The students of the department take part in various extension activities, like NSS, Gram Swachata Abhiyan, Nirmal Gram Yojana of Govt. of Maharashtra.

• Under National Environmental Awareness Campaign (NEAC) Department has taken cleaning of Ecchornia and Plastic in Rankala Lake.

• The department has taken Tree Plantation and Nurturing Programme in University Campus in association with Rotary Club MidTown, Kolhapur.

• The students also undertake cleanliness drives, street plays, and exhibitions to educate and create awareness about Environment in the general public.

The department provides consultancy services for air, water and soil monitoring to industries and local people. The charges are according to MPCB Mumbai .The departmental consultancy has undertaken different projects like

• Panchaganga and Krishna River Water Quality Monitoring , 2007-08 ,MPCB(Rs. 3,93,332/-)

• Terra Pharma Consultant , Goa (Rs.2,80,000 /-),

• Ambient Noise Monitoring During Diwali Festival in Kolhapur (Rs.13,500/-)

• Environmental Status Report, 2008 of Kolhapur Municipal Corporation(Rs. 2,45,000/-)

The department has it’s own lecture halls for M.Sc., DEPM, M. Tech. and PGDISHE students. Separate laboratories like Microbiological laboratory, Environmental Chemistry Laboratory, Remote Sensing laboratory  etc. The department also has Computer Laboratory with internet facility.
