Internet Unit

The Internet Unit of Shivaji Univesity is divided in to three cell’s for smooth and effective functioning viz. Network Cell, Website Cell and Library Internet Hall. The Network Cell maintains the campus-wide network and under take the expansion and proposed requirements were as Website Cell is maintaining web related activities. University’s official website www.unishivaji.ac.in is under control of Website Cell. The Library Internet Hall is a centralized Internet facility given to researchers, students and faculty members where 140 nodes are available with printing facility. The Internet Unit is functioning on self supporting basis which charges its services for users at nominal charges approved by Management Council.

To keep control and accept new challenges, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor has formed following Monitoring Committee.

Campus-wide network has been established and functioning from October 2001. Internet Service set up has been established in the USIC Extn. Bldg. This cell has taken active participation in the Establishment of Campus-wide Network and Internet Services at University’s Kolhapur campus. This cell is engaged in the Maintenance hardware and services viz. HTTP, Web, and Mail.

Campus-wide computer network of around 750 nodes has been established in the University campus at Kolhapur. 18 building in the campus are connected using Fiber optic backbone. At present 27 Academic departments as well as Main Administrative Building is connected.

A 10 Mbps leased line is procured from BSNL. Firewall equipment make Cisco Pix is used for security of the network. University has received 10 Mbps lease line from UGC under UGC-ERNET project. Now total 20 Mbps lease line is being shared for various activities. 1 GBPS lease line has been received via BSNL under National Knowledge Network (NKN) Project. Shri. K. S. Deorukhakar, Network Administrator is working under guidance of Dr. M. J. Joshi, Co-ordinator.

Shivaji University has entered into the cyber space. An official website of the University titled www.shivajiuniversity.com was inaugurated at the hand of Hon. Shri. Ram Raje Naik-Nimbalkar, Minister of State for revenue, Govt. of Maharashtra on 20th May 2002. The function held in the Senate hall was chaired by Hon.Vice-Chancellor Dr.M.G.Takawale. Hon. Pro. Vice. Chancellor Dr. V.M. Chavan and Ag.Registrar Dr.S.H. Pawar graced the function.

University is having www.shivajiuniversity.com and www.unishivaji.ac.in websites which are maintained by Website Cell. Presently more than100 pages of exhaustive information are available. Website Cell is hosting all examination results, circulars, syllabi, information about various functions, tenders, appointments and admission forms, Shiv-sandesh (a monthly e-bulletin) etc. time-to-time. Also Website Cell has assisted to University administration by using various IT techniques like Academic Council meeting agenda and syllabi on CD which have saved considerable amount.

However, this cell is also engaged in web application development and since last nine years more than 10 web applications were successfully designed, developed and implemented. Since last 6 years the online student feedback mechanism is successfully implemented, same has been appreciated by NAAC, Bangalore. Shri. Amol S. Ghunake, Data Entry Operator working under the guidance of Dr. P. N. Bhosale, Professor, Chemistry Department.

Internet Hall at Library Building was inaugurated by Dr. Arun Nigavekar, Chairman, University Grants Commission, New Delhi on 3rd Aug. 2002. Internet Lab was Setup from the Grants Received by U.G.C. in year 2000/2001. At present this lab is used by all post graduate and research students for their study purpose.

Library Internet Lab is opened from 7.00a.m. to mid-night 11.00 (daily 16 hours). Now total 140 nodes with internet connectivity are available to students and faculty. At present all faculties, post graduate and research students are using this lab for their study purpose. In a day approx. 350 to 400 students are taking benefit of this lab. Presently CD writing and printing facility has been provided to all users.

Dr. M. J. Joshi, Co-ordinator is looking after the Internet Unit activities. Internet Unit has also taken keen interest to promote IT awareness among the students by organizing seminars and specialized lectures.
