Introduction

The Department of Journalism was instituted in the year 1968 on dated 15th July. The Department was established due to initiative taken by Hon. Dr. A.G. Pawar, Founder Vice-Chancellor of Shivaji University. The committee appointed by Hon. Vice-Chancellor had recommended to establish the Department to strengthen the language Journalism in South Maharashtra. In the beginning the department was imparting education for C.J. i.e. (Certificate Course in Journalism) till 1988. In the year 1983 Dr. Kalme O.V. joined the department as a Lecturer & Head. From 1987-88 BJC was started as a regular P.G. degree. However, they became fruitful in the 1989. From the beginning Shri Ananr S.Telvekar was heading the department as a Director and Dr. S.P.Pawar as Asstt.Director (1968 to 1979). Dr. V.L.Dharurkar (1980 to 1982) Dr.L.R.Nasirabadkar (1982 to 1983) Dr.O.V.Kalme (1983 to 1995) Nisha Pawar (Mude) (September, 1995 to December, 1995) Dr. A.S. Chousalkar (1995 to 1999) Dr. R.L.Pandit (September, 1999 to 2008) have lead the department as the respective heads and since January 2008 Dr.O.V.Kalme is looking after the department again as a Head of the department

    • Changes made in the courses or programmes and contribution of faculty:

    From 2008-2009 BJC course has been revised and adopted Semester Examination with CIE and Credit System. The MJC will take this opportunity from next year. The Shivaji University is the only University in Maharashtra offering M. Phil. in Journalism and Communication Science, which has been introduced from September, 2005.

Faculty

The Department of Journalism & Communication Science, established in 1968, is one of the oldest in the University. Shivaji University was the foremost university in India to start Journalism Course in the University during its inception years. The Department has upgraded the one year Certificate Course in Journalism to a full-fledged post graduate Bachelor’s Degree Course in 1987.The Masters Degree in Journalism & Communication Science (MJC) was started in 1996. The Ph.D. programme was started in 1999 and M. Phil programme in 2005. At present it has three staff members- two Readers and one Lecturer in selection grade. All of them have secured Ph.D. degrees. They are specialized in the subjects like Print media, Communication theory, Development Communication and Public Relations
