Introduction

The Department of Education was established on 7th of November 1979 and the building in which it is housed is named after the renowned educationist Padmabhushan Dr J P Naik. The Department has one Professor and eight Assistant Professors.

The department has always updated itself and changed the thrust areas of teaching and research over the years in keeping with the UGC, NCTE guidelines at the M Ed, M Phil, and Ph D levels. It has started need based courses of P .G Diplomas.

The specializations offered in the Department are: Information and Communication Technology Education, Special Education, Environmental Education, Teacher Education, Management Education with revision of syllabus of the M .Ed course thrice in the five years, with the feedback obtained from students and employers. The modalities of practical components are modified every year for improving its objectivity, transparency, flexibility and practicability after a meeting of Principals of Local colleges where our students undertake the Internship programme and are placed later on

The transaction of curriculum in this Department at M Ed and M Phil involves more of participatory learning techniques such as think pair share learning, poster presentation, role play, panel and group discussion, simulation and games, quadro teaching as well as individualized learning such as CAI, seminar etc besides lectures which is minimized to a large extent to enable students to became self sufficient individuals who can search for knowledge and generate knowledge. These efforts have paid handsomely by way of good SET and NET results of the Department which has grown tremendously in the last five years from in 2003-04 to in 2007-08. More than 50% of the Education SET result of Maharashtra at a time is from this Department. Moreover the students of M Ed / M Phil/ Ph D are passing in other competitive exams of NET,MPSC etc and have occupied high administrative as well as academic positions as Dy Director of Higher Education, Educational Officers in Govt of Maharashtra, Heads of Departments, Principals of Colleges, Controller of Examinations.

The placement efforts of the placement officer and staff has resulted in 100% placement with employers of all over Maharashtra vying to employ our Department students during the campus interviews conducted in the Department.

In order to develop students as wholesome individuals the department provides personality development and English communications skills programmes and also provide opportunity for interacting with the Educational experts, during conferences, and guest lectures and conduct of research in the community, during their community related project works such as literacy survey of women in suburban areas and literacy level of Z P school children and conduct of remedial teaching for slow/ weak learners, disseminate environmental awareness and scientific attitude among school children and in rural areas

The faculty and students are encouraged to attend refresher courses, training programmes, conferences and co-curricular and extension activities, etc. and also actively participate in the conduct of the same in the Department. All the teachers are IT enabled by way of Intel and Microsoft training having signed MoU’s with the two organizations.

The senior teachers have served as peer team inspection committee members and contributed for ensuring quality of teacher education programmes in the country. They are widely sought as resource persons by other universities in India especially on their academic bodies of BOS, BUT&R, BOE, Faculty etc. and they also act as master trainers for ICT in Colleges of Education.

At present the Department has two Research Scholars,one is UGC Project fellow and other one is Teacher fellow.

Two Major UGC Research Projects are going on. One UGC Major Research Project and three minor UGC Research projects are complete.

The department has International collaborations with teachers as Master Trainers for G L O B E (Washington D C) – started by Al Gore, WWF, Intel and Microsoft and train school science teachers of different states in India, train B Ed / M Ed students for the conduct of Experiments related to Environment to save Earth and disseminate ICT for lesson planning, teach and conduct research.

The future plans of the department are to:

  • lay more emphasis on use of ICT for e-teaching and e-learning
  • continue to provide need-based courses
  • establish guidance and counseling centers
  • standardize tools and tests developed for educational research
  • establish chairs for value-education, courses and research
  • reform the evaluation process
  • start interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary course such as M Sc / M Ed (Modular Integrated – 4 year) course
  • focus on research with constructivist approach in thrust areas identified by the department

All activities and programmes of the department are geared to meet the vision of the department to produce teacher educators of global stature.
